Grand Bahama Island is the fourth largest island to make up the archipelago of the Bahamas. Visitors can enjoy an infinite number of attractions, ranging from the exploration of underwater caves to visiting enchanting fishermen villages that welcome everyone. Here lies the city of Freeport; a vivacious town which, since the 1950’s, has entertained many with its scores of restaurants and ecological tourist attractions; these, combined with its renowned artisan market are the main reference points for visitors. It is also one of the main ports of entry into the Bahamas, as one of the area’s international airports (FPO) is situated here, servicing flights daily.

Freeport
Visitors on the island of Grand Bahama can join in all of the action this fascinating place offers. Considered as the island’s town centre, it was developed in 1955 with the backing of Wallace Groves, a resident of the American city of Virginia. Today, the town of Freeport is home to numerous duty-free shops, several restaurants offering an extraordinary selection of culinary experiences, a variety of games and many other attractions for the enjoyment of the whole family.
Lucaya
Located in the city of Freeport, it’s considered as a suburban dream to the tourism industry, as it was built with it in mind. This piece of paradise embraces numerous places of interest on Grand Bahama Island. Some of these include the Treasure Bay Casino, Lucayan National Park, Lucayan Caverns and the Port Lucaya marketplace.
Lucayan National Park
The Lucayan National Park plays a pivotal role in the Lucayan history and culture. Founded in 1982, this national treasure has 40 acres, where you will be able to discover up close the distinctive backdrop of Grand Bahama Island. This park also serves as the dwelling place of a unique attribute: the Lucayan Caverns. More than six kilometers of underground caves, caverns and tunnels make it one of the most expansive underwater systems in the world! Travel across the endless tunnel systems and discover the most relevant facts of Lucayan history. Its many paths and esplanade allows visitors to experience an adventure surrounded by a breathtaking landscape, made up of pine trees, dozens of exotic flowers and other vegetative zones of the Bahamas.
Port Lucaya Marketplace
The Port Lucaya Marketplace offers a huge selection of unique merchandise exclusive to the Bahamas. This 12 acre picturesque beach-front complex was established in 1988 and is located on a small peninsula outside of Freeport. With 66 stores, 13 international restaurants and bars, 94 straw vendors stalls, 15 hair braiders, 23 artisans and local bands playing traditional Bahamian music, the Port Lucaya Marketplace is the ideal place to immerse yourself in and learn all about the Bahamian culture.
Treasure Bay Casino at Our Lucaya
A casino inspired by the world-renowned casinos down the Las Vegas Strip, amid over 35,000 feet of fun and games. It has 400 different slot machines, and over 21 tables of card games. The Straw Market
If you are in the market for Bahamian straw crafts, the Straw Market is the place to visit. Woven straw art was considered a major industry back in the 1940’s for women of the Bahamas Islands. Today, this market remains an integral element of island culture. Located on the west end of the Port Lucaya Marketplace, it is comprised by local artisans who sell absolutely everything, from hand-made jewelry to furniture made from straw and wood.
Garden of the Groves
The most lavish tropical garden in the Bahamas Islands. These gardens were first presented as a gift to the community. It made its public debut back in 1973 when its doors were officially opened to the public for the enjoyment of its local citizens and visitors to the city alike. This precious place has over 10,000 species of flowers, plants and trees which attract a great diversity of exotic bird and butterfly species. Additionally, it is also home to the Grand Bahama Labyrinth, a serene place apt to reflect and meditate in.
